Classes

Art  Instruction by  Philippe Gandiol

My goal is to help you develop your own painting style and share with you my passion for art.  Typically, as a new student, you will start with painting still life.  I will gradually take the still life painting outdoor where you can get familiar with direct sunlight.  Finally, we will paint landscapes or cityscapes, outdoor (plein air painting).

Oil/Acrylic painting classes 2010:

Davis Art Center
1919 F Street
Davis, CA 95616
530.756.4100 (call for more information and registration)

Oil and Acrylic Painting from Life: A Direct approach.
Class comment: Recommended for those having some painting experience (any media)
This course (10 3-hour sessions) will allow you to develop your skills with an in-depth study of composition, values, edges, color, light and brush handling to help you create successful paintings and develop your own style.  During the first session, the instructor will be going through the material list provided upon registration and will be doing a painting demonstration of a still life illustrating the different steps leading to a finish piece. Several other painting demonstrations will be done to illustrate different aspects of the course. Part of the focus for this class will be learning how to see the world as a painter and bring out what’s inside of you: your own voice and your heart, in order to make art a vibrant part of your life.  A materials list will be provided upon registration but you might want to wait until after the first class to make any purchase.

Materials list
Below is a suggested list of supplies to bring to the classes.

- Easel:
I recommand the French easel (Julian is the best brand in my opinion) which is fairly compact and allow you to carry your palette, paints, brushes and canvas/board.  Once unfolded, it is very stable and gives you room to set your palette, turpentine, etc.

- Palette: you can use the wooden one that comes with the easel or make one out of a piece of 1/8" smooth plywood. It is convenient to get a Masterson plastic palette container which allows you to carry a 12"x 16" palette safely and keep the paint fresh for a couple of days.

- Charcoal to draw with.

- 2 canvases or canvas boards: size 9" x 12", 11" x 14" or 12" x 16".

- Drawing pad (4"x 6") and pen (4B).

- Oil  or Acrylic paint:
Gamblin ( art sketching/student grade), Windsor and Newton (or Winton a student grade for Windsor and Newton), Rembrandt or Utrecht.   Other brands will do also.
Titanium white
Yellow Ochre
Cadmium Yellow light
Cadmium Red medium or similar permanent red

Alizarin Crimson
Ultramarine Blue
Cobalt Blue
Viridian Green
Transparent red oxyde
colors in yellow are recommended for beginners. The palette can then be expanded.

- Brushes / Knife:
Flat  #2, #6, #10. Filberts could also be used.
Palette knife: medium size (5) with a round tip

- Cleaning:
Odorless turpentine (Gamsol from Gamblin is a good one) to clean brushes and palette.
Jar with coil or screen at the bottom (to separate turp from paint deposit)  or airtight brush washer(with removable straining insert) to hold the turpentine.
Paper towels.
Rag.
A plastic grocery bag for waste.

-Others:
Small clamps to attach waste bag, brush holder, etc. to your easel.

- If painting outdoors: umbrella, hat, sun screen, water to drink, dress in layers.
